Chainsaws, Pie, and Family
In this story from the KC Underground Network, Rob Wegner shares how his neighborhood microchurch became a place of belonging for neighbors who once felt isolated.
“The people will believe when they see how you love one another. The greatest apologetic is an extended spiritual family living in everyday gospel community.” - Rob Wegner
Rob noticed an older gentleman walking his dog daily who never responded to greetings—only to learn he was legally blind and mostly deaf. A microchurch gathering became the bridge: after pie, conversation, and a gentle invitation, the gentleman and his outgoing wife joined the spiritual family. Within six weeks, the wife shared tears of gratitude, expressing that relational brokenness in their biological family had left them lonely—but now, they had a family again.
Over the years, the community has multiplied its love. When a massive storm split a neighbor’s tree, 10–15 microchurch members arrived with chainsaws to help. Later, a new couple moved in, attended a party and baptism, and immediately felt the warmth of the family. Rob reflects, “The people will believe when they see how you love one another. The greatest apologetic is an extended spiritual family living in everyday gospel community.”
This story highlights how gospel-centered microchurches create tangible, relational spaces where needs are met, burdens are lighter, and joy is deepened—all through ordinary acts of love, care, and hospitality.
