Michelle Wegner • Disciple Maker
From Goodbye to Baptism
In this story from the KC Underground Network, Breanna Wiebe sits down with Michelle to reflect on how a neighborhood microchurch in Kansas City experienced both the ache of sending and the joy of continued growth.
“It’s so far above and beyond anything we could ask or imagine… We just keep saying yes to the next thing—and God keeps doing miracles.” - Michelle Wegner
For nearly six years, Michelle and her husband Rob have cultivated a spiritual family in their neighborhood. About four years ago, a young couple quietly moved in. What began with driveway movie nights slowly grew into deep friendship and shared life. Eventually, one of them was baptized—an especially powerful moment that reminded the entire community that this really is Church.
Then came the news: a job offer and a cross-country move.
Though proud, Michelle describes feeling like they were “sending out” their spiritual children. Their hearts hurt—but they also sensed God’s hand in it. In a remarkable turn, the couple selling their home intentionally chose buyers they believed would experience and contribute to the same love they had found in the neighborhood.
Even more beautiful? They invited the new couple to their own goodbye party—which became both a farewell and a welcome.
Soon after, the microchurch hosted another backyard baptism for two neighbors. The new couple showed up on their own—and simply fit. What could have been awkward became seamless. What could have been an ending became multiplication.
This story captures the heart of disciple-making in Kansas City: neighborhood microchurches built not on perfection, but on obedience, hospitality, and trust that God is weaving something bigger than we can see.
