From Prayer Walks to Kids’ Bible Studies

In this story from the KC Underground Network, Andrew Spellman and Sierra Spellman share how intentional prayer prepared the way for gospel impact before they even unpacked a box.

“I really encourage you to start praying that God would help you learn to love yourself—because I love who you are, and I know He does too.” - Andrew & Sierra Spellman

Before moving into their new home, Andrew and Sierra were already praying for their future neighbors. While renovating the house, they introduced themselves, spent time outside, and began prayer walking the neighborhood daily.

They were warned about a group of neighborhood kids who “cuss like sailors,” but instead of withdrawing, they leaned in—setting clear boundaries while building real relationships. Over time, the kids began regularly showing up at their house. One child even remarked, “The neighborhood has been better ever since you guys moved here… I think it’s because of all your guys’ praying and stuff.”

Within just a couple of months, Andrew and Sierra invited the kids to a weekly Discovery Bible Study (DBS). What started as prayer walks turned into Tuesday night Bible discussions, tag games, and meaningful spiritual conversations.

One powerful moment came when an eight-year-old boy shared that he didn’t like the color of his skin and prayed that God would make him lighter. The very next day, the group read about humanity being made in the image of God. Many of the kids responded by committing to remind themselves daily that they are created in God’s image.

Another older child later shared a dream about calling out to God for help and experiencing deliverance from fear—reinforcing the truth that God hears and responds.

Their obedience shows how planting the gospel often begins with something simple: walking the streets, praying out loud, and opening your front door.
