Experiencing God’s Call for Justice
In this story from the KC Underground Network, Mike and Christine share how God deepened their calling for biblical justice and equity. They describe justice as God’s perspective of fairness and equity, a concept that has been growing in their hearts for many years.
“I’m asking myself, how do I see the image of God in them, and how is it being diminished?” - Mike & Christine Johnson
Their journey took them to Montgomery, Alabama, a historical hub of slavery and the civil rights movement. Through an Arrabon-organized experience, they engaged in group discussions, museum visits, and immersive learning, including stops at the Legacy Museum, to witness firsthand the evolution of systemic oppression—from slavery to segregation, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration.
Christine describes the experience as physically and emotionally profound, emphasizing how the oppression “felt like being pulled from the ground” and left a lasting impression. Mike highlights key takeaways, such as the importance of seeing the image of God in every person, recognizing echo narratives in society today, and understanding how systemic injustice persists.
Their reflections illustrate how personal experience, combined with historical awareness and spiritual insight, can shape active participation in God’s justice work. Through this, they are better equipped to observe, engage, and respond to inequity in their own communities, demonstrating courage, empathy, and faith-driven action.
