Kevin Hartman • Disciple Maker
In this story from the KC Underground Network, Kevin Hartman shares how God is working through intentional prayer in his neighborhood in Lee’s Summit and Grandview.
“If I abide in Him and trust Him for the outcome, I find myself joining Him in His work rather than depending on my own strength.” - Kevin Hartman
Kevin and his wife have been building relationships with 8–10 families over several years. Recently, Kevin began using the BLESS 5 prayer practice, praying for five people, five minutes a day, five days a week. Using the B.L.E.S.S. acronym, he prays for physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, inviting God to work in each person’s life.
One neighbor, “Bill,” had experienced a string of personal tragedies, including the unexpected death of his wife and a recent heart attack, leaving him vulnerable and in need of support. Through persistent prayer, Kevin sensed an opportunity to connect with Bill. One day, seeing Bill in his yard, Kevin stopped, and the conversation naturally opened up. Bill shared about his recent struggles and near-death experiences, saying, “Somebody is watching out for me.”
Kevin responded, sharing that it was Jesus watching over him, using the conversation as a gospel moment. This encounter highlighted how Kevin’s prayer rhythm positioned him to join God in the work He was already doing.
Kevin encourages others to adopt the BLESS 5 tool, explaining that consistent prayer allows believers to notice God at work and participate in His movement in their neighborhoods.
