Transforming Homes, Transforming Lives: Fresh Start KC in Action

In this story from the KC Underground Network, Gary Conley and Tricia Conley share how they are bringing the Gospel and practical hope to people transitioning out of homelessness through Fresh Start KC Ministries, a nonprofit they founded.

“I would rather fail at working hard and doing something than do nothing at all.” - Gary & Tricia Conley

Their approach combines faith, construction skills, and relational support. Starting with just a few volunteers, they partnered with local organizations like Hillcrest Transitional Housing, Home Works, and Eden Village to sponsor and remodel apartments for individuals moving out of homelessness or foster care. Gary explains how dilapidated apartments were transformed into welcoming homes, creating safe, stable spaces for new beginnings.

Beyond renovation, Fresh Start KC addresses systemic barriers, including city zoning and affordable housing challenges. The Conleys meet with city officials, leverage relationships, and seek collaborative solutions, demonstrating how practical skills combined with spiritual discernment can bring lasting impact.

Their work reflects a larger vision: communities empowered by like-minded, faith-driven individuals can provide hope, stability, and dignity for people often overlooked. Through prayer, perseverance, and a willingness to follow God’s leading, Gary and Tricia see His guidance in unexpected opportunities and growing partnerships.
