A New Chapter of
Mission for Kansas City's
I/DD Community
After more than 25 years of combined experience walking alongside people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and the staff who serve them—Zephan, Taylar, and Breanna are stepping into a new season of mission.
Beginning in 2025, The Wonder Project Hub Team joined KC Underground with a clear conviction: every person, regardless of ability, bears the image of God and deserves repeated opportunities to encounter Jesus.
The Wonder Project exists to sow the Good News, reveal the image of God, and promote flourishing among the I/DD community in Kansas City. Their work moves along three connected paths:
Sow the Good News
Using tools crafted for diverse sensory and cognitive needs, including art, dance, music, and picture communication systems, to help individuals with I/DD engage deeply in prayer, giving, serving, Discovery Bible Studies, and disciple-making.Open Access to Resources
Helping people with I/DD gain valued social roles, participate more fully in community life, and exercise greater choice and presence in the city they call home.Build an Advocacy Network
Raising awareness across Kansas City and helping shape a society that is more inclusive, informed, and welcoming of the I/DD community.
Why This Matters
A little over 10% of people living in the Kansas City metro have some form of disability. And yet, this community faces tremendous barriers to a life of meaning, connection, and flourishing — barriers that produce real spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical harm.
When people with I/DD are excluded from the larger Body of Christ, something essential is lost. The image of God is distorted. The Body is robbed of gifts it doesn't even know it's missing.
God desires that people of every ability have the chance to see, hear, experience, and respond to the Gospel in ways that truly meet their needs. The Wonder Project exists to make that possible in Kansas City.
How You Can Partner
To launch and sustain this four-phase vision, The Wonder Project is seeking to raise $471,000 over the first five years.
You can help by:
One-Time Gift — sow into the foundation of this work and help make the first steps possible.
Monthly Partnership — consistent, recurring support is what allows this team to go deep, stay present, and build trust over time within the I/DD community.
Every gift supports research, resource development, inclusive community initiatives, and ultimately — a sustainable coffee shop that creates dignified employment and meaningful belonging for individuals with I/DD.
A Note from The Wonder Project
'“We believe Kansas City's I/DD community isn't on the margins of God's mission. They're at the heart of it. We're inviting you to join us in this work, so more individuals and families experience the hope, dignity, and belonging that Jesus offers.”
