Fasting Together: Obedience, Hunger, and Deeper Dependence

In this story from the KC Underground Network, Ted Ingalls and Tami Ingalls reflect on how fasting has reshaped their spiritual rhythms in Peculiar, Missouri.

“An act of obedience can’t always be tied to an immediate blessing… you don’t even know what fruit may come from it.” - Ted & Tami Ingalls

Rather than focusing on ministry outcomes in their context, Ted and Tami share what God is doing in them through a renewed rhythm of fasting.

For them, fasting is not just skipping meals—it is an act of worship and obedience. It is offering their bodies as a living sacrifice, humbling themselves before God, and choosing dependence over self-sufficiency.

Previously, fasting had been sporadic or individual. But after sensing frustration about a lack of spiritual movement—and recognizing they weren’t fully engaging the first step of extraordinary prayer and fasting—they decided to begin a weekly rhythm together.

What followed surprised them. They began experiencing increased prayer throughout the day, with every hunger pang serving as a reminder to turn their attention toward God. They noticed greater clarity of mind, deeper gratitude when breaking their fast, and a strengthening of trust and faith. Tami even observed reduced physical pain on fasting days. Yet beyond the tangible benefits, Ted emphasized something deeper: obedience in the Kingdom cannot always be measured by visible results.

Fasting is not a transaction—it’s trust.

They acknowledge there may be fruit they cannot yet see. The Kingdom often works mysteriously, beyond immediate outcomes. What matters most is obedience.

Their story reminds the Underground that disciple-making begins not just in neighborhoods—but in the hidden places of surrender.
