Bringing Hope to Women Impacted by Incarceration

In this story from the KC Underground Network, Breanna Wiebe sits down with Amy Mitchell, director of Anchor Her, an organization serving women impacted by incarceration, domestic violence, and addiction.

“We’re supposed to be a hospital for the hurting, not a brand with smoke machines.” — Amy Mitchell

Amy shares how her own story of hardship fuels her passion for reaching women who often feel forgotten or invisible. Anchor Her exists to embrace, empower, and ignite women in seasons of transition, offering safe spaces where they can experience community, healing, and the Good News of Jesus.

Rooted in Isaiah 61, Amy describes Anchor Her as a ministry focused on “binding up the brokenhearted and setting captives free.” What began as sharing testimonies in shelters and jails has grown into ongoing support groups, including a new gathering space at The Way KC Church—designed as a place where women can “drop anchor” while rebuilding their lives.

One of the most powerful stories Amy shares is about Rachel, a woman who connected with Anchor Her after incarceration. Even after being unexpectedly sentenced to 14 more months in jail, Rachel didn’t lose hope. Instead, she became a light inside prison—leading Bible studies, encouraging others, and writing letters back to the Anchor Her team. Today, Rachel is not only free, but a leader, helping other women walk the same path of healing she once needed.

This story reflects the heart of the KC Underground: the church as a hospital for the hurting—going to people where they are, forming spiritual family, and trusting God to redeem even the hardest circumstances.
