Prayer of Examen: The Disciple-Maker Pathway

Become Aware of God’s Presence

Take a deep breath and become still. The Father is here. Jesus is with you. The Holy Spirit is near. Before you begin, remember: this is not a performance review with God, but a conversation with the One who loves you.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see your life with honesty and grace. Ask Him to reveal where He has been present in this season, where you have resisted Him, and where He is inviting you deeper into love and obedience.

“Search me, God, and know my heart…” Psalm 139:23

Review Your Journey on the Disciple-Maker Pathway

Rather than simply retracing your day, ask the Holy Spirit to help you retrace your journey on the Disciple-Maker Pathway in your current context. Rewind the film slowly. Consider your life where you live, work, study, play, and relate. Notice the people, conversations, burdens, hopes, resistances, and invitations shaping this season.

Do not rush to fix or judge yourself. Simply become aware of the movements of your heart as you walk with Jesus in ordinary life and mission.

Move One: Extraordinary Prayer and Fasting

Where have you experienced hunger for God in this season? Recall moments of prayer, surrender, worship, dependence, or longing for His presence.

Now notice where anxiety, distraction, exhaustion, or self-sufficiency may have crowded out attentiveness to God. Have you been reacting more than praying?

Offer these places honestly to Jesus.

– pause –

Move Two: Live as a Disciple-Maker

Reflect on your presence among people in your everyday life. Where have you been attentive, compassionate, interruptible, and fully present? Where have you loved through simple acts of listening, encouragement, hospitality, or service?

Now notice where fear, distraction, busyness, or judgment may have closed you off from others. Ask the Spirit to help you see people through the eyes of Jesus.

– pause –

Move Three: Plant the Gospel

Consider the ways God may have invited you to plant seeds of the Gospel through conversations, prayer, encouragement, hospitality, or acts of mercy.

Where have you sensed the Spirit already at work in people around you? Where have fear or insecurity held you back?

Remember: your calling is not to force outcomes, but to faithfully plant seeds and trust God with the growth.

– pause –

Move Four: Microchurch Emerges

Reflect on the relationships and spiritual community forming around you. Where have you experienced encouragement, vulnerability, shared mission, hospitality, prayer, or spiritual friendship?

Now notice where fear, disappointment, exhaustion, or self-protection may be keeping you from deeper spiritual family.

Bring both your gratitude and your longing honestly before Jesus.

– pause –

Move Five: Multiplication

Where might God be inviting multiplication through your life? Reflect on the ways you have encouraged, equipped, released, or invested in others.

Now notice where fear or control may be limiting multiplication. Remember that the kingdom often grows quietly, like seeds underground.

– pause –

Reconcile With Jesus

Now picture yourself seated with Jesus. Not a hurried Jesus. Not a disappointed Jesus. Jesus your Good Shepherd and friend.

Speak honestly with Him about this season of your journey. Tell Him where you feel alive and hopeful, and where you feel tired, distracted, resistant, or afraid. Receive His mercy again. Receive His invitation again.

Ask Jesus: “How are You inviting me to join You in the next step of the journey?”

– pause –

Closing Prayer

“Father, awaken me to Your presence. Jesus, teach me Your way. Holy Spirit, make me attentive and responsive.

Deepen my hunger for You. Help me live as a faithful Disciple-Maker where You have sent me. Teach me to plant the Gospel with peace and trust. Form me into a person who cultivates spiritual family and releases others into mission.

I ask for these things for every disciple-maker in every context of the Underground.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.”
