God’s Promise in the Midst of Life’s Battles
When the world feels overwhelming and it seems like darkness is winning, does God still have a promise—a covenant—for His people? The answer is a resounding YES.
Psalm 91 is one of those passages that wraps us in comfort and assurance. It’s as if God is saying, “I have you covered. I am your protector, your rescuer, and your comfort—especially as you choose to make your home in Me.” This Psalm doesn’t promise a life without hardship—we all face challenges. But it does promise that in the midst of every storm, you are never alone. God is right there with you, offering His presence, protection, and peace.
We may not know for certain who wrote Psalm 91—some suggest Moses, others David—but what truly matters is the heart of its message: God is our refuge and fortress. That’s the core truth we can hold onto, no matter what we face.
Personally, praying Scripture, especially Psalm 91 has made a real difference in my life. It brings a deep sense of peace and stirs up my faith, reminding me that God is in control and He is for us and not against us. It helps me align my heart with His will and trust Him more fully.
This week, let’s pray Psalm 91 together—not just for ourselves, but for our families, friends, neighbors, our church, and our wider spiritual communities like KC Underground and The Church of Kansas City. Let’s also lift up our local cities and communities, especially those who are vulnerable, at high risk, immigrants and refugees, inprisoned and those far from Jesus. Everyone needs to know they are seen and loved by God.
A Simple Prayer Practice: P.R.A.Y.
To guide our prayers, let’s use the P.R.A.Y. practice from 24/7 Prayer
P – Pause
Take a few deep breaths. As you exhale, welcome Holy Spirit. If your mind is busy or your heart feels distant, just pause. Breathe again. Whisper His name. Be still.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8
Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1-2
When we seek Him with our whole heart, we truly encounter His presence.
R – Rejoice & Reflect
Read Psalm 91:1–16 slowly, out loud if you can. Let it wash over you as a personal promise from God. Notice which phrases stand out. Pay attention to how your heart responds, are you feeling peace, comfort, doubt? Capture your emotions, don’t dismiss them.
Ask Holy Spirit, “What are You showing me today?
What do You want me to trust more deeply?”
Write it down. Praise Him for what He reveals.
A – Ask
Psalm 91 gives us spiritual authority to pray for protection, peace, and covering—not just for ourselves, but for others.
Reflect on these promises:
No plague will come near your tent. Psalm 91:10
He will command His angels concerning you… Psalm 91:11
He will rescue and protect because you love Him… Psalm 91:14
Now, make it personal. Use this fill-in-the-blank prayer for your people, your city, or any situation:
______ dwells in the shelter of the Most High and rests in the shadow of the Almighty. I say of the Lord, ‘He is ______’s refuge and fortress, our God in whom we trust.’
Surely He will save ______ from the fowler’s snare and the deadly pestilence... He will cover _____ with his feathers and under his wings _____ will find refuge; his faithfulness will be _____ shield and rampart.
_____will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plaque that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at ______ side, ten thousand at _____ right hand, but it will not come near. ______ will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
If _____ says, “The Lord is my refuge,” and make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake _____ and no disaster will come near _____ tent. For he will command his angels concerning _____ to guard _____in all your ways, they will lift _____ up in their hands so that _____ will not strike your foot against a stone. _____ will tread on the lion and the cobra; _____ will trample the great lion and the serpent.
“Because _____ loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. _____ will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver _____ and honor _____. With long life I will satisfy _____ and show _____ my salvation.”
(Continue through the Psalm, inserting names or places as you feel led.)
Remember Isaiah 55:11, My Word will not return to Me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
When we pray God’s Word back to Him, something powerful happens.
Y – Yield
Lord, I believe Your Word is alive and Your promises are true. I release fear and doubt today, and I receive the truth of Psalm 91 for myself, my family, and my city. Thank You that Jesus fulfills everything written in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. As Jesus said, “Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44
God, I yield to Your will. Let Your kingdom come and Your covering rest over every vulnerable person and situation I lift to You today. Thank You for never breaking covenant with us. You are our refuge and fortress. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
Where is your “secret place” with the Most High?
What part of Psalm 91 speaks most to your season right now?
Who do you feel led to cover in prayer this week?
Action Step:
Grab a friend and pray together for the burdens on your heart. Ask your friend to share his burdens with you. Don’t stop there—ask Jesus how to put feet to the prayers. Often, we are the answer to our very own requests, that’s why Holy Spirit burdens us to pray.
Let’s keep leaning into God’s promises together. He’s got us.
