God’s light in the darkness

This prayer guide contains ten verses about God’s light. With so much violence, anger and confusion in the world right now, we can hold on to the truth of God’s hope and light more than ever. God is love. God is light. Nothing or no one can stand against the force of his being. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are inside you, go before you, and stand with you. Read through these verses and pray the accompanying prayers out loud if you can. (Feel free to pray your own words if you are more comfortable doing that.)

1. You can have Confidence in God’s Light and Salvation

Verse: Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I take refuge in the truth that You are my light and my salvation. I have no need to fear because You are my stronghold. Cast away my fears and fill me with confidence as I trust in Your eternal light. Guide me to live boldly, reflecting your hope to those in need.

2. You can Rise and Shine with His Glory

Verse: Isaiah 60:1-3

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples, but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

Prayer:

Lord, I rise and shine because Your glory has risen upon me. Even though darkness covers the earth, I trust that You will arise upon me and allow Your glory to be seen in my life. May others see the brightness of Your presence in me and be drawn to Your hope.

3. You are the Light of the World

Verse: Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me the light of the world. Help me not to hide the light You have given me but to place it where it can illuminate the lives of others. May my good works glorify You and inspire hope in those around me.

 4. Your Life Reflects His Light

Verse: John 1:4-5

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Prayer:

Jesus, your life is the light that guides humanity. Let this divine light shine brightly in me, dispelling any darkness that tries to take hold. Grant me the courage to reflect Your light confidently, knowing that darkness cannot overcome it.

5. You are a Witness to the True Light

Verse: John 1:6-9

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

Prayer:

Lord, like John the Baptist, I want to bear witness to the true light. Empower me to testify to Your everlasting light so that others may believe and find hope through me. You are the light that gives light to everyone coming into the world.

6. You can Live as Children of Light

Verses: Ephesians 5:8-9, 1 Thessalonians 5:5

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true).

For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.

Prayer:

Lord, remind me each day that I am no longer in darkness but now light in You. Help me to walk as a child of light, bearing fruit in all that is good, right, and true. I embrace my identity as a child of the day, and I commit to living out Your light.

7. You can Follow the Light of Life

Verse: John 8:12

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Prayer:

Jesus, You are the light of the world and whoever follows You will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. I choose to follow You, trusting that Your light will guide my steps and illuminate my path.

Lead me away from any darkness and into Your everlasting light.

8. You have God’s Light Shining in your Heart.

Verse: 2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Prayer:

God of Creation, just as You commanded light to shine out of darkness, let Your divine light shine in my heart. Fill me with the light of the knowledge of Your glory, revealed in the face of Jesus Christ. May this light transform me and be a beacon of hope to others.

 9. You can Have Fellowship in the Light

Verse: 1 John 1:5, 7

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. ... But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Prayer:

Father, You are light, and in You, there is no darkness. Help me to walk in Your light, fostering genuine fellowship with others who share in Your light. Cleanse us from all sin through the blood of Jesus, so that we may stand united in hope and love.

10. You can Live in the Eternal Light of Glory

Verse: Revelation 22:5

And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Prayer:

Lord God, I look forward to the day when night will be no more, and we will need no other light because You will be our eternal light. Until that glorious day, help me to live in Your light and reign with hope and confidence. Amen.
