A United Cry for Acts 2 in Every Context

Each Tuesday, we release a prayer guide with the hope that, together, we can unite our hearts in a laser-focused way through prayer. Today, as the Underground, we join in intercession for the promise of Acts 2 to be fully realized in every context of our city.

Strategic Focus: Open to the Spirit

Today’s Scripture: Acts 2:17-21, 37-39

Take time to slowly and prayerfully read the following passage:

β€˜In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

your young men will see visions,

your old men will dream dreams.

Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Acts 2:17-21, NIV

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, β€œBrothers, what shall we do?’

Peter replied, β€˜Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offβ€”for all whom the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:37-39, NIV

Move #1: Contemplation and Meditation

As a disciple-maker in your context, meditate on this passage and consider the following questions:

  • What would it look like for the Spirit to be poured out on all people in your context?

  • What dreams and visions might the Spirit be stirring in those around you?

  • What signs and wonders could the Spirit bring to your community?

Close your eyes and envision the faces of people in your contextβ€”men and women, young and old. Picture the Spirit being poured out upon them.

What does the Spirit bring to mind? What do you see? Listen and take note of it.

Move #2: Contending Prayer

Turn Your Reflections into Prayer

Transform your observations into intercession

Example:

  • Sarah seems to have a passion for serving the homeless. Lord, awaken her to see that this is a vision from You.

  • Jim has been sick for weeks. Lord, bring healing in a way that makes Your presence undeniable.

Pray for Individuals by Name

Lift up specific names of those in your context. Pray that they would call on the name of the Lord and be saved.

Ask for an Outpouring of the Spirit

Using Peter’s words as a guide, pray for:

  • Repentance and transformation

  • Baptisms and renewed faith

  • Forgiveness and healing

  • A deep receptivity to the Holy Spirit

Declare the promise over your context:

β€œThe promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offβ€”for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

May we posture ourselves with expectant hearts, trusting that the Spirit is at work even now.

Move #3: United Cry for Every Context

Now, remember every context within the Underground where disciple-makers are at work. Pray for the Spirit to be poured out in each one, asking for repentance, transformation, baptisms, faith, forgiveness, healing, and a deep receptivity to the Spirit’s movement.
