Rediscovering Jesus

Each Tuesday, we release a prayer guide with the hope that we collectively join our hearts through prayer in a “laser-focused” way. Today, as the Underground, we come together around the theme of rediscovering Jesus.

Take a moment and imagine the times when you were most ‘in awe’ with God. Maybe it was at a camp experience as a kid, when you first met him. Maybe it was a pivotal moment in your adulthood where He revealed Himself in a special way. These are the moments that cemented our faith.

Where did those moments go? It seems that as those mountaintop moments get further away, so does our awe and wonder of Him. Today, we’re praying together for a rediscovery of Jesus in all His glory.

Read

Matthew 17:1-8

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Reflect

Jesus reveals himself to Peter, James and John, and they fall to the ground in awe of King Jesus. Although they knew who He was, and just the chapter before Peter proclaims Jesus as Messiah, Jesus reveals himself and they discover his majesty and glory in a new way.

We are just like the disciples. They are just like us. We proclaim Jesus lordship with our words, but our eyes have grown stale to His Glory.

Today we pray for a rediscovery of Jesus

We pray to rediscover His character

Take a few minutes, and reflect on the character of God. Write down the ways His perfect character has affected your life.

We pray to rediscover His lordship

Take a few moments to recognize His lordship. He is not only good, he is also sovereign. He reigns over evil in our lives, he protects us from the enemy. He is fully in control.

We pray to rediscover His mission

He is perfect, He is in control, and He has a mission and purpose for us. As we reflect on His call, we pray together:

Lord, you are the full embodiment of hope. We ask today for a fresh rediscovery of your glory. We ask for a mountaintop moment, where we see you in all of your glory again. Would you create a moment of silence and clarity to see You in a new and fresh way. We pray for a revitalization of the places in our lives that have become stale. We ask for more of you, in our homes and in our city.
