Not crushed
We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Reflect
The journey of becoming more like Jesus doesn’t always feel beautiful. There is pain inherent in the process — not without what can feel like overwhelming and crippling pressure. Each step in the work is unique and necessitates a unique timespan.
It took Michelangelo two years to utilize the precise pressure of hammer and chisel to complete his masterpiece, “David.” Step Canyon took mere hours to form through a massive flood in the foothills of Mount St. Helens. Diamonds take ages to form — under immense pressure and heat — and years of explosive force to rise to the earth’s surface.
Similarly, our spiritual, mental, and emotional formation requires the reception, absorption, transfer, and dispersion of what can become immense pressure. Like Michelangelo’s “David,” we are a uniquely crafted masterpiece emerging from a blunted and nondescript beginning. Like Step Canyon, turbulent waters pass overhead as we are shaped to become a conduit of that power. Just like diamonds forming, priceless and ancient treasure is being deliberately solidified and revealed in us through fire and might.
Let’s take a moment to remind ourselves of the One who is above every power and authority as we practice gratitude and breathing prayer.
Breathe:
Bless the Lord, my soul.
Say:
I am afflicted in every way but not crushed.
Pray:
I bless You, Jesus, because You alone are able to uphold me in all ways.
Breathe:
My God and my all.
Say:
I am perplexed, but not driven to despair.
Pray:
You, Lord, are my hiding place and refuge in times of trouble. I bless Your Name.
Breathe:
Lord, have mercy.
Say:
I am persecuted, but not forsaken.
Pray:
I bless You, Holy Spirit, my complete comfort.
Breathe:
I belong to You, O Lord.
Say:
I am struck down, but not destroyed.
Pray:
I bless you, Father, who is mighty to save. You lovingly hear and respond to my prayers. Thank You. Amen
