Manifesto Value: Jesus

When the KC Underground launched in 2019, part of our formation was to adopt the Underground Manifesto created by the Tampa Underground. The Manifesto is comprised of eighteen values that reflect our theological convictions. These values bind us together as a diverse and creative network. This prayer guide will cover one of those values.

Read: Spend some time slowly reading and rereading this value:

Jesus

The way of Jesus is our way. Before and in all things, we value Jesus as the image of the invisible God. We long to worship Jesus by imitating his life and ministry. Both our theology and praxis are relentlessly Christological. He is our model, mentor, hero, mediator, savior, judge, king, and ruler of all. All of our values flow from what we understand about his character, concerns, and the practices of his ministry.

Retell: As a practice to embrace what you are reading, journal the value in your own words.

Read: Choose at least 3 - 5 of the following supporting passages and read through them.

Biblical Foundation

Matt 28:19, John 1:3, John 13:15, John 14:6, John 17:18, Romans 5:10, Ephesians 1:22-23, Philippians 2:5, Colossians 1:15-20, Colossians 2:9, Colossians 3:17, Hebrews 1:3, Hebrews 12:2, Ephesians 5:1-2, John 13:14-15, Acts 26:16, Romans 1:4, 1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 7:25, Acts 4:12, Titus 3:6, Romans 2:16, John 9:39, 2 Timothy 4:1, Revelation 1:5, Revelation 19:16, Colossians 1:18, Revelation 17:14.

Consider: As you read and rewrote this value, what stood out to you the most? What did the Spirit highlight as you read the supporting passages from Scripture? What do you sense the Spirit is saying to you? Take a few minutes to journal your thoughts.

Pray: Now that you have had a few minutes to consider what the Spirit might be saying to you, turn these thoughts into prayers.

  • Perhaps it is a prayer of repentance: Jesus, your way has not been my way. I long for you to reframe my thoughts. I want to follow fully in your way. I want my life to be a worshipful response, imitating your life and ministry.

  • Perhaps it is a prayer of adoration: Jesus, you are my model, mentor, hero, mediator, savior, judge, king and ruler of all. You are so much more than all of this. Words cannot express how wonderful you are. We could ascribe to you all the titles we could think of and we would still fall short of declaring your worth.

  • Perhaps it is a prayer of intercession: Jesus, help us as the KC Underground, to demonstrate with all that we are, that before and in all things, we value you as the image of the invisible God.

Each of these simple prayers can be a springboard into more. A prayer of confession or repentance might lead you to invite Jesus to highlight areas of your life where you need to give more over to Him. Linger there. A prayer of adoration might very well lead you into a time to just sing and declare your thanksgiving for all of the ways Jesus has shown up in your life.

Respond: If Jesus highlighted a particular way for you to respond in obedience to Him in light of this value, consider sharing this with another disciple-maker.
