Making the Simple Sacred

Today, as the Underground, we come together in prayer and fasting. Every great move of God in the Bible and throughout history begins with Extraordinary Prayer and Fasting. From the other side of eternity, we will find that the most influential people were not, perhaps, Presidents or Prime Ministers but the people who walked with God through passionate prayer.

We love a hero’s story. Whether a dramatic rescue or a triumphant victory, we often desire the same for ourselves. We know that God fights our battles— He’s a miracle worker— but today, we fix our hearts on the small, sacred moments we miss daily. We pray that our kingdom antennas would be raised and we would see the beauty of God all around us.

The Majesty of God In Nature

Read

Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God’s wonders.
Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash?
Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge?

-Job 37:14-16

Reflect

Take a minute and look at your surroundings. Is there peace or chaos? Rain or shine? How do you feel right now? Just as Job is told, stop and consider God’s wonders. He is in control.

Pray

God, would you remind me today that my surroundings are all under your perfect orchestration. Every cloud, every breath of wind and light are all ways that your beauty is at work in my life.

Jesus at Work in our Work Read

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothingcan be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.
-Ecclesiastes 3:9-14

Reflect

Take a minute and reflect on your work. What dominates your day? How often do we push through work to get to our “real lives?” Where are the places in your work where God may be trying to show you his beauty?

Pray

God, we give our work to you— all of our stresses and frustrations, all of our distractions and toil. It all belongs to you, and it all points to your redemptive beauty. We ask You to highlight where You’re asking us to join You in our work. May we not miss You in the simple places.

The Beauty of Jesus in our Home

In Matthew 7, Jesus talks of the wise builder who built his house on stone. When the wind blows, and the storm comes, the home stands because it was built on a secure foundation. Wherever home is to you, today we end our prayer that we would build the simplicity of our home on the foundation of Jesus. Every family dinner, every boring night on the couch, is a divine moment where Jesus is building his kingdom in us and our homes.

Pray

God, you own it all. We build our homes, families, lives and work on You and You alone. Would you show me the places where You’re at work today, and give me the sight not to miss the small, sacred moments You give.
