Jesus, our hope in the dark

Prayer Focus: Jesus, our hope in the dark

Listen: Breathe by The Brilliance

Amid the heart-rending stories of mass shootings, wars, the pandemic, etc., we feel grief. Many of us have lost loved ones to the pandemic and are barely hanging on to our next breath. Hope can feel far away. But Jesus, He is our hope. He is our salvation, our God, mighty to save. In our collective grief, we lift our eyes to Jesus, the first and the last, the one who was and is and is to come.

Read:

‘See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone’s work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

‘Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.

‘It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!

‘The Spirit and the bride say, And let everyone who hears say, ‘Come! And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift.

The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon!’

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20

Reflect:

  • In John’s vision in the book of Revelation, the eternal Jesus calls everyone to come to him. As I hear Jesus’ invitation for me, what stirs within me?

  • In what ways am I thirsty for Jesus?

  • Who do I most want Jesus to give the water of life to?

  • Note the images used for Jesus in this passage. Which one speaks to me most deeply?

  • I hold onto this image and use it in my prayers.

In these last moments of quiet, give thanks that Jesus is the beginning and end of all things.

I pray that as I come to him, his love will flow through me to others.

Glory be to the Father, and to
the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is
now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
