Episode Overview
In this episode, Brian Johnson and Corey dive into the B.L.E.S.S. rhythms, a practical and intentional framework for living on mission. Rooted in Genesis 12 and the life of Jesus, these rhythms help everyday people join God in blessing their neighborhoods and relationships through intentional prayer, listening, eating, serving, and sharing stories.
Key Takeaways:
What Are the B.L.E.S.S. Rhythms?
The B.L.E.S.S. acrostic spells out everyday rhythms to live like Jesus:B – Begin in Prayer: Start with prayer and stay in prayer. Ask God where He is at work.
L – Listen and Engage: Be present, ask good questions, and genuinely listen to people’s stories.
E – Eat: Share meals intentionally—walls come down when we eat together.
S – Serve: Look for practical ways to serve others in meaningful ways.
S – Story: Share your story of God’s work in your life and invite others to discover His story.
The Big Picture: God's Strategy for Blessing
Genesis 12: God blesses Abram so he can bless others: “Through you, all nations will be blessed.”
Jeremiah 29: God calls His people in exile to seek the shalom (fullness) of the city.
Jesus’ Life: Jesus lived incarnationally—fully present in people’s lives and using these rhythms daily.
How the B.L.E.S.S. Rhythms Work
They are not a checklist but rhythms of life—what it looks like to be present and intentional.
These rhythms help connect prayer (extraordinary prayer and fasting) to planting the gospel in relationships.
Practical Applications
As an Individual: Reflect on where you’re already living these rhythms. Are you eating intentionally? Are you listening well?
As a Microchurch: Evaluate how your community is practicing the rhythms together. Are you serving each other and your neighborhood?
As a Missionary: Pay attention to God’s work in your network of relationships and lean into these rhythms with intentionality.
Breathe In, Breathe Out
Learn to integrate the rhythms in a balanced way:
Breathe In: Personal prayer, listening to Jesus, sharing meals with believers, and preaching the gospel to yourself.
Breathe Out: Contending prayer, listening to others, sharing meals with the spiritually interested, and sharing God’s story in meaningful ways.
Why This Matters:
The B.L.E.S.S. rhythms provide a simple, yet powerful framework to live missionally and join God in restoring relationships, families, and communities. By living these rhythms intentionally, you’ll accelerate disciple-making and see gospel transformation where you live, work, learn, and play.
